The Palazzo Te Foundation presents the exhibition Inventing Nature: Leonardo, Arcimboldo, Caravaggio<\/em>, scheduled to run from September 26, 2026, to January 10, 2027, in the monumental halls, marking the culmination of the Quincentenary year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engaging in a dialogue with the exceptional decorative scheme conceived by Giulio Romano, the exhibition\u2014curated by Barbara Furlotti and Guido Rebecchini\u2014celebrates the relationship between the natural world, artistic production, and court culture in the sixteenth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Works by great artists such as Leonardo, Arcimboldo, Carracci, and Caravaggio\u2014alongside a rich selection of sculptures, drawings, precious objects, exotic materials, and automata on loan from major Italian and European museums\u2014will guide visitors to experience nature as a phenomenon to be explored through science, art, and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n

What was nature in the sixteenth century?
What does its pervasive presence at Palazzo Te reveal to us?
How does it prompt a reflection today that is capable of galvanizing us?
Is the relationship with what we conceive as “Nature” not one of the fundamental cornerstones of our thinking and our actions?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poised in constant tension between wonder and fear, bewilderment and the desire for control, the exhibition\u2014which includes the spectacular Chamber of the Giants\u2014inspires a thoughtful and surprising reflection on the relationship between art and nature. Through seven thematic sections\u2014titled Creating, Destroying, Sensing, Reproducing, Knowing, Astonishing, and Animating\u2014the exhibition presents the diverse visions of nature that coexisted in Renaissance culture: from an instrument of divine will to a destructive force, and from a subject of scientific interest and collecting to an object of curiosity and a source of courtly entertainment, all while exploring artistic inquiry as a means to understand, control, and imitate nature.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cContinuing our exploration of the secrets embedded in the pictorial and architectural narrative of Palazzo Te, we move from Metamorphosis to Nature. In this exhibition\u2014which engages in a profound dialogue with the palazzo itself\u2014we examine how the 16th-century concept and representation of nature took shape: nature as something \u2018other\u2019 than the human\u2014wondrous yet conquerable\u2014destined to mold modernity. It is essential to trace the origins of this vision if we are to move beyond it today.\u201d

With this in mind, the Fondazione Palazzo Te has sought to collaborate with key local institutions, offering visitors additional exhibition experiences through their own permanent museum and natural history collections. Together with the Palazzo Ducale di Mantua, Palazzo D\u2019Arco, the Biblioteca Teresiana, the Liceo Classico Virgilio, and the Bosco Fontana State Nature Reserve (Municipality of Marmirolo), a city-wide itinerary will be highlighted, inviting visitors to discover nature in its many forms and artistic interpretations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
