Singing the Middle Ages. The lauda in Cortona between devotion and civic identity.

MAEC – CORTONA
June 28, 2025 – October 5, 2025

Singing in the Middle Ages. The lauda in Cortona: between devotion and civic identity, brings together for the first time the four precious surviving laudariums of the city. One of them, manuscript 91 from the Library of the Municipality and the Etruscan Academy (the Cortona Laudario par excellence), is currently the oldest existing collection of songs in the Italian language.

The exhibition, curated by Francesco Zimei, Professor of Musicology and History of Music at the University of Trento and a leading scholar of this repertoire, will take place at the MAEC in Cortona and is promoted by the Etruscan Academy together with the Municipality of Cortona, in collaboration with the Frate Elia da Cortona Study Center and the Diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro, and with the support of the European ERC Advanced ‘Laudae’ project.
